2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Friends,

The 2019-2020 season will be remembered with great historical significance. The season began with magnificent performances, including Petrushka as part of our Twisted 3 collaboration with BalletMet, CAPA, and Opera Columbus; Paul Moravec’s outstanding oratorio Sanctuary Road, featuring stories from the Underground Railroad; and Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle, featuring beautiful glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly. In March, our world changed with the COVID-19 pandemic and we began applying our creative energy to continue best serving our community without stoppage despite canceled concerts and programs.

We never lost sight of our mission to inspire and build a strong community through music and pivoted into new and meaningful opportunities that would not have been possible during a regular season.

With new channels of accessibility, the Symphony offered an innovative range of virtual and in-person events and performances to audiences in central Ohio and around the world. These have included over 150 videos of virtual and live performances, new educational materials and activities to support remote learning for K-12 students, 20 free outdoor, socially-distanced live performances, such as Columbus Symphony Community Concerts, and over 30 ensemble performances at local senior communities and food banks.

Our ability to emerge into a brighter future is made possible through the dedication of our many supporters, patrons, and volunteers like you. Thank you for being a member of our Columbus Symphony family.

Sincerely,

Our Mission

“Inspiring and Building a Strong Community Through Music” is the core of everything we do.

Our Vision

The Columbus Symphony takes its responsibility for our role in the community seriously, and we are committed to be the “National Exemplar of a Vibrant Dynamic Orchestra.”

Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

The Columbus Symphony stands against racism and inequity, and stands for inclusion, diversity, equality, and justice for all. We recognize and are saddened by the pain caused by racism and inequities of all kinds. We support those who are peacefully raising their voices to ensure justice, equality, and attention be given to enable our community to heal, build, and grow together.

Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin has called on all residents to create a more just Columbus. We believe in our responsibility as an organization and as individuals to be a part of this process. We stand ready to listen, learn, and take action to better serve every child and every adult in our community. We stand ready to be a part of the healing during this time.

Several years ago, we adopted a philosophy and commitment in support of “ONE CSO,” as we firmly believe that the future is brighter when we are all in it together. Our role is to ensure that the brilliance and healing power of music is accessible to all members of the Columbus community.
As individuals, as an orchestra, and as a community, we have the power to transform lives and a mutual responsibility to build a more inclusive, more peaceful, and more inspiring world.

Andrea Bocelli Concert

For the first time in nearly a decade, the Columbus Symphony and Chorus performed alongside legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli for a special one-night only sold-out performance on December 14, 2019 at The Schottenstein Center.  The nationwide tour included stops in San Francisco and Las Vegas and Bocelli was excited to team with the Columbus Symphony.

“It is infinitely more interesting and exhilarating to be able to make music together with a real symphony orchestra.”
Andrea Bocelli – The Columbus Dispatch

Your Support

Our supporters make all that we do possible. Thank you for your confidence and support in the Columbus Symphony during trying times. The generosity of our patrons and donors has been more critical than ever and sustains our mission as a nonprofit arts organization to enrich the lives of residents throughout central Ohio and beyond.

The 2020 Symphony Gala was reimagined to our first ever virtual celebration, hosted by Angela Pace on August 17-22, 2020. Access to the Gala program and online auction was open to the public and free of charge all week long, with special performances by our Columbus Symphony musicians, solos by concertmaster Joanna Frankel, and a heartwarming serenade by guest artist Tony DeSare. Special messages were shared by Board Chair Lisa Barton, Music Director Rossen Milanov, and Youth Orchestras student Alexis Cunningham.

Education

The Columbus Symphony is elevating the quality of life in our community by being a leading music education resource in the community and by being an organization that makes a difference. The Columbus Symphony is dedicated to educating and entertaining people of all ages by fostering talent, creating future audiences, nurturing intellectual development, and sparking creativity in students, families, teachers, and lifelong learners.

Columbus Symphony Education programs are made possible by the generous support of Gay Su Pinnell.

Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras

In 2019-2020, a total of 348 young musicians performed in the five ensembles of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras program:

Columbus City Schools Partnership

The Columbus Symphony has partnered with Columbus City Schools throughout our history, to enrich Columbus’ students education through programs such as Young People’s Concerts in the Ohio Theatre, free Concerts in Schools for elementary students, and the tuition-free Columbus All City Orchestra for young musicians from Columbus high schools.

For the 2020-2021 school year, we are expanding our partnership with Columbus City Schools, to ensure that central Ohio children continue to be able to benefit from quality music education throughout the current pandemic, including the asynchronous-based curriculum for all third grade students.

Interactive Websites

Committed to being a leading music education resource to meet the growing education demands for the arts in our community, the Columbus Symphony launched two new, interactive websites for students, parents, teachers, and caregivers in September 2020 to promote online learning, featuring over 85 videos recorded by Columbus Symphony musicians.

Each site is comprised of three areas – “Learn,” “Play/Perform,” and “Visit” – to explore, engaging students with activities and information tailored to each age group.

Mindful Music Moments

Mindful Music Moments, a program to teach stress reduction and mindfulness techniques through classical music, served 4,700 students at seven local schools in 2019-2020. Nearly half of participating students were classified as disadvantaged, and 9% had limited English proficiency.

For 2020-2021, the Columbus Symphony expanded our sponsorship of Mindful Music Moments, offering the program for free to all Columbus City Schools and central Ohio pre-schools. Sponsorships of seven other local school districts already participating in the program were also renewed.

Columbus Symphony Cares

Through our innovative Columbus Symphony Cares initiative, which partners the CSO with central Ohio human/social service organizations, we served some of central Ohio’s most vulnerable residents through ensemble performances, instrument “petting zoos,” and donations of CSO concert tickets.

Our Brands & Program Areas

Since 1951, the Columbus Symphony has been proud to serve as the region’s flagship music performance organization. With our musicians who live, work, and teach in central Ohio, we offer the transformative power of music through our core classical Masterworks series, Pops, Picnic with the Pops, and Education and Community Engagement.

Masterworks

Highlights included Twisted 3, in collaboration with BalletMet, CAPA, and Opera Columbus, which featured the CSO performing Stravinsky’s Petrushka accompanied by puppets, performers, and live filmmaking; the “American Festival,” which featured Sanctuary Road, an oratorio by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell, based on the writings of Underground Railroad conductor William Still; two “Russian Winter Festival” programs; a concert featuring Saint-Saën’s Organ Symphony, performed by soloist Cameron Carpenter on the Ohio Theatre’s historic “Mighty Morton” organ; and Bartók’s opera, Bluebeard’s Castle, accompanied by sculptures by celebrated glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Pops

The 2019-2020 season included the beloved community tradition of Holiday Pops, a “mashup” of Brahms and Radiohead; a Valentine’s Day concert celebrating the music of Frank Sinatra; and programs featuring the CSO performing the score live alongside the films The Nightmare Before Christmas and – in collaboration with CAPA – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Education & Community Engagement

Education programs included Concerts for Kids; Young People’s Concerts; six Youth Orchestras; free Concerts in Schools; Mindful Music Moments, in partnership with CAPA and Opera Columbus; Musicians in Schools; Backstage Tours; Young Musician’s Competition and Young Musician’s Showcase; and professional development opportunities for teachers.

Community Engagement programming included community ensemble performances at venues throughout central Ohio; the Columbus Symphony Cares initiative; Pint-Size Performances in local craft breweries and pubs; Side by Side with the CSO, which gives amateur musicians an opportunity to perform in a rehearsal alongside their professional colleagues in the CSO; and Columbus Symphony Pride events that engage and serve the LGBTQ+ community, including family day at Holiday Pops, Pride Nights at several concerts, and pre-concert happy hours.

In addition to their classical concerts, the Chorus’s annual Holiday Pops concerts, conceived and directed by Jenkins from their beginning in 1983, have grown into one of the best-loved musical traditions in the central Ohio area.
